In GTA 5 and GTA Online, Michael, Franklin, Trevor and your online character all start with different Player Stats based on their backstory and skillset.
These stats can be improved with experience, which will in term improve each character's individual abilities, reactions and endurance as they progress through the game.
The more a character uses their skills, the more their related stats will increase. So for example, the more time you spend driving cars, the more your driving skill will improve.
Keep in mind that Player Stats are unique to each character and spending a lot of time behind the wheel as one character will increase that characters driving stats, but won't have any effect on either of the other character's driving stats.
Special
Using a character's Special Ability will gradually improve their Special stat.
As the stat bar increases, the speed at which that character's special ability fills up will also speed up.
To use your characters special ability, push both sticks at the same time on consoles, or hit CAPS LOCK on PC.
Stamina
Extra stamina will allow you to sprint, cycle and swim for longer without getting tired. This stat, like the others, increases as your character performs each of those activities.
If you want to get your stamina up fast, try participating in a few Triathlons found on the map.
A fast way to level stamina online is to do bicycle races.
Shooting
The shooting stat determines how accurate your character is and reduces the recoil of every weapon. You will also be able to reload faster and carry more ammo.
The more targets you hit, particularly with headshots, the more your shooting stat will increase.
It is advisable to spend some time in the Shooting Range and take on the shooting challenges as they are a quick way of improving your shooting skill.
This stat is increased by 3% for every Gold challenge you complete in the Shooting Range challenges, 2% for every Silver challenge completed and 1% for every Bronze challenge.
Strength
The higher your characters strength, the more damage they will inflict during hand-to-hand combat.
Other benefits include the ability to climb ladders faster, take less damage from falls, car crashes, explosions and even fire.
Strength also improves the character's tennis and golf skills by allowing you to hit the ball harder.
Once again, to raise these skills, you must perform the activities mentioned above. The strength stat increases 1% for every 20 punches.
A good way to raise strength online is to do the arm wrestling activity.
Lung Capacity
The higher your lung capacity, the more your character can stay submerged under water for longer periods of time.
Your lung capacity will increase the more time you spend underwater. This stat increases by 1% for every minute you spend underwater.
Stealth
Your stealth skill in GTA V determines how quiet your character will be in both stealth and normal movement modes.
You will also be able to move more quickly when engaged in stealth mode.
To enter stealth mode, press the LEFT STICK on your gamepad (or hit CTRL on PC).
Driving
The more you improve your characters Driving stat, the better vehicles will handle both when driving normally and when airborne or performing wheelies.
The driving stat will also help you land your jumps easier.
The stat increases the longer you spend driving by 1% for every second spent in the air in a vehicle, four-wheel landing and wheelies.
Try doing a bunch of land races to raise your driving skill online quickly.
Flying
The higher your flying stat, the less likely you will be to experience the effects of turbulence when flying.
With a higher stat, you will also be able to fly and land more smoothly.
Also, increasing your flying stat will allow you to fly all the aircraft in the game.
A good tip is to visit the Flight School to improve this stat
The following Flight School missions will earn you 3% stat increase for Gold, 2% for Silver and 1% for Bronze:
Training Take Off, Runway Landing, Inverted Flight, Knife Flight and Flat Hatting.
Also for every 10 minutes of flight time, you will earn a 1% stat increase.
You can raise your flying skill online fast by doing the flying races and by landing a small plane at an airfield a bunch of times in a row.
Mental State
New, GTA Online only
Mental State is a new stat / feature that was added in The High Life Update DLC for GTA 5 Online.
This new stat keeps track of how you play online, and adjusts the color of your mini-map blip accordingly.
When you perform aggressive actions like killing other players or pedestrians, your mini-map blip will appear red to other players.
Killing players will turn your blip red much faster than killing NPCs.
Though note that killing other full-red blip players will not increase your mental state, and will instead reward you with RP.
When your blip is red, you stand out on the map to everyone and they will all try to take you out to get RP.
The 5 Mental States
0-19%: Normal (White mini-map blip)
20-39%: Unstable (Light pink mini-map blip)
40-59%: Deranged (Pink mini-map blip)
60-79%: Maniac (Red mini-map blip)
80-100%: Psychopath (Blood-red mini-map blip)
How to lower mental state: In order to lower your mental state, you can do a series of jobs.
